In high demand: art and culture in Ingolstadt

City Theater Ingolstadt

The City Theater Ingolstadt is situated in the heart of the city, close to the Danube, on a site once occupied by a military railway station. It opened in 1966, replacing the theatre's temporary home on Proviantstrasse. The "old" theatre on Rathausplatz had been razed to the ground during the War.
The plans submitted by the Hämer architectural office were not well received at first: the jury criticised the insufficient "subordination of the new building or building ensembles" among the historical buildings surrounding the proposed theatre, saying the cityscape would be compromised (quoted from Rudolf Koller and Siegfried Hofmann). Ingolstadt's residents, however, loved their new theatre, which enjoyed a very successful second season under manager Knut Weber.

Old Town Theater

The Old Town Theater (Altstadttheater) is situated on Kanalstrasse at the other end of the city centre close to the city walls, in a building that used to serve as a salt warehouse. Seating up to 100, it stages unusual, small-scale productions. The programme encompasses everything from psychological plays through satire to music shows. The theatre owes its existence to a private initiative: together with an association named Proszenium e.V., actress Ingrid Cannonier from Ingolstadt was responsible for setting up the venue beneath the centuries-old roof. The top-class productions staged here use the simplest of means and are the outcome of much hard work. Shows at the Altstadttheater are must-see events for anyone interested in culture and the arts.

A vibrant scene for artistic happenings

Cabaret Days, the Blues Festival, events celebrating female artists, Literature Days, the International Jazz Days, concert series and the Ingolstadt music scene: there's always something going on in the city. Two key venues for festivals are "Diagonal" in the civic centre and the "Neue Welt" cabaret theatre. Both have small, compact stages that are integrated seamlessly in intimate surroundings. Even if there are no events taking place, the two venues are ideal for meeting up with friends and acquaintances. Staging around 100 events each year, the "Neue Welt" is one of the most active theatres in southern Germany.
